Rinascimento a Siena

The Renaissance condemned the style it labelled Gothic, and advocated a return to the principles and language of classical art.  It originated in nearby Florence and spread throughout Europe. Seldom has a change been as revolutionary as this one.

Jacopo della Quercia, Lorenzo Ghiberti and Donatello bear witness to the early Renaissance and can be seen in the Baptistery, Duomo and Santa Maria della Scala Hospital.  Michelangelo and Pinturicchio  left their high Renaissance mark in the Duomo, when they worked for the Piccolomini family.
